The American artist Olivia Rodrigo (19) had great success when she released her debut album «SOUR» last year, which set several records.

Now the 19-year-old opens up about what it is like to become a superstar in record time.

– You have to make music for yourself, because you love it. I think you can never make good songs whether it is to please others or to become popular, she says.

The artist says that she was in a bad place in life when she made the songs in the debut album.

– As long as you put your heart into it and it means something to you, it never goes wrong.

The love affair that is the inspiration behind the songs “Drivers License”, “Deja Vu” and “Good 4 U” has created many rumors.

Fans have long wondered who she sings about in the songs. Rodrigo has previously explained that the album’s main themes are jealousy and remorse, feelings she thinks young women are often ashamed of.

– Scary thought

Rodrigo tells VG that it is nerve-wracking to share video clips from the recording of the songs.

– There are such intimate pictures of me and my producers in the studio. It is a scary idea to share those images with the rest of the world, where they can be interpreted in different ways, she says.

VG talks to the artist over video chat in connection with the premiere of the documentary «driving home 2 u», together with press people from all over the world. The documentary deals with the time when she made the success songs together with producer Dan Nigro.

– It gives an insight into what it is like to make music, which is a magical process.

– Rehearses for tour

At the same time as the documentary premieres, she is busy with rehearsals before her first tour, which starts in the US in April, before moving on to Europe.

– The point of the film for me, was that I wanted to create content for my fans who can not come to the tour, as well as to talk about what it was like to make the songs, she says.

Had homeschooling

Although Rodrigo became world famous in her teens, she does not think it has made her life more abnormal. About making music and living as artists, she says:

– It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but I had not imagined what would happen. And not that it should go as well as it has done in the last year.

The album has set both sales and flow records.

– I’ve always had a strange life. I have always had a form of performance, says the artist and adds that having home school and being an only child has also contributed to a different upbringing.

– I have always been creative, so I think this is what I have always done. Now people just look at it a little differently, which is exciting. I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember. My parents have pictures and videos of me singing self-written songs as a six-year-old. I am very grateful that I get to write songs and that people like to hear me sing.
