Harvey Weinstein transferred to jail in upstate New York

The deposed producer Harvey Weinstein, sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual assault and rape, was due to be transferred to a prison in upstate New York on Wednesday.

The 60-year-old has so far been held in the infamous Rikers Island prison, located in the Queens neighborhood of New York, since his conviction on March 11.

He was to be extracted on Wednesday and transported to the Wende Correctional Facility, the New York State Prison Service (DOCCS) told AFP.

This high-security prison is located more than 500 km northwest of Manhattan, not far from Buffalo.

A temporary prison

Harvey Weinstein is not a priori intended to stay in this establishment, where he will be evaluated to determine in which prison he will actually serve his sentence.

To determine his next destination, the prison services of the State of New York will take into account his state of health, physical and mental, the nature of his crimes and his notoriety.
