Harvey Weinstein will be extradited from an upstate New York jail to California in the coming weeks to face sexual assault charges in Los Angeles, a judge said on Tuesday.
The Erie County judge has ordered the sexual predator – who has been locked up at Wende Correctional Center since his conviction in New York City last year – be shipped to Los Angeles in early July.
The disgraced filmmaker was indicted in April by a Golden State jury on 11 counts of sexual assault.
Weinstein’s attorney, Norman Effman, argued in a hearing Tuesday that Weinstein needed medical attention and was staying at Wende Medical Center.
Effman said he would not receive the same treatment at an LA County jail – a claim disputed by prosecutors.
Effman asked the judge to delay his extradition for 10 days, but this was also rejected by the lawyer.
In a statement, Weinstein spokesman Judah Engelmayer said he was disappointed with the decision.
“We are disappointed with this decision today. Earlier, Mr. Weinstein’s attorney filed a habeas corpus subpoena in LA County Superior Court. We are asking the court to suspend Mr. Weinstein’s extradition to Los Angeles until he can receive the medical treatment he needs here in New York, ”he said in an email.
