Harvesting the Fragrance: Exploring the World of Jasmine Pickers and Perfume Makers in Southern India

Fresh scents are everywhere around skilled pickers in southern India who harvest buds of white jasmine before pressing it to extract the precious essence used by perfumers around the world.

And the scent of jasmine is only emitted at night when this flower blooms, so it is necessary that the buds be harvested before they open.

“We know which ones to pick,” says Malarkody, who has extensive experience picking jasmine. Then she collects some blooming flowers and puts them on her dark hair.

And in the ancient city of Madurai in southern India, jasmine flowers, which are widely cultivated, attract major perfume makers, as they are used in the manufacture of perfumes from prominent brands, including “Jadore” from “Dior” and “Mon Guerlain” from “Guerlain”.

Raja Balaniswamy, director of “Jasmine Concrete”, which specializes in squeezing large quantities of fresh flowers to obtain a few precious drops of the essential liquid, says that this perfume is “one of the most expensive in the world.”

The jasmine produced in Madurai, an Asian species with the scientific name Jasminum sambac, received a “geographical indication” from the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2013, which indicated that the Madurai perfume was “intensely fragrant”.

In Madurai, no home is devoid of the bright white flower, which is also used as a hair accessory, or in huge temples.
