The center will not declare the Wayanad landslide as a national disaster

The central government cannot declare the Wayanad landslide as a national disaster. The Minister of State for Rural Affairs said that landslides and landslides in the Churalmala Mundakai areas do not fall under the criteria of a national disaster.

Kerala Special Representative KV Thomas had written to the Prime Minister on behalf of the state. The demand put forward in the letter was that the Churalmala landslide should be declared a national disaster. The Center’s position is clarified in this sharp response.

Current norms do not allow floods and landslides to be declared as national disasters. That is why the Wayanad landslide cannot be included in the national disaster. In this financial year, the Center has given more than 300 crores to the Kerala Disaster Relief Fund. Therefore, the center says that the necessary amount can be spent from here to deal with such problems.

After the disaster, members of the middle class visited the disaster-affected area in August. In response to the letter, the Union Minister clarified that the necessary support has been given to the state based on the report submitted by them.
