Sometimes heavenly, sandy, luxuriant, sometimes windswept, rocky, inhospitable… It is often a question of landscape when we talk about the islands. However, an islet can hide more than some exotic species: it is often the bearer of stories. And it is these island stories that “Le Temps” is telling you this summer.

It’s a small New York island, off the Bronx. Hart Island is 1.6 kilometers by 400 meters and remains inaccessible, with rare exceptions. Little known, it nevertheless has a rich and troubled history. The city’s public cemetery, it has been home to mass graves since 1869. Poor people, individuals whose bodies no one claimed and stillborn babies are buried there. It took the Covid-19 pandemic for the island to be talked about again.
