Harry Styles is causing a stir with a special tradition

These days, artist and actor Harry Styles (29) is on tour in Australia, and recently visited the city of Perth. The Grammy winner chose from the stage to participate in a very special Australian tradition, to perform a “shoey”.

A “shoey” means to drink from one’s shoe. According to the Australian newspaper Perth Now Styles – according to tradition – read several signs that the audience had brought with them. On one of the signs, a fan had written that he wanted the artist to carry out the tradition.

The 29-year-old then asked the person in the audience to show how it is done, before performing the tradition himself.

The situation has also taken its toll on the video sharing service TikTok.

– Disgusting

The 29-year-old later took off his shoe, poured water into it and did an almost classic “shoey”. Normally, the shoe should contain beer. Before drinking the water, he said the following to the many thousands in the audience:

– This is the most disgusting tradition I have heard of.

The reactions have not been long in coming on social media, and it has boiled over on Twitter with various comments.

“Tradition or not, it was disgusting,” writes one fan on Twitter and quickly receives support from others.

“No, but really, this made me sick. It’s so disgusting.”

A third person described the stunt as disgusting:

“I’m not kidding, I literally threw up.”

Styles put the shoe back on after taking part in the Australian tradition, jokingly telling the crowd:

– I feel like a different person. I’m ashamed. It feels so personal, an intimate moment to share with so many people. I will discuss this thoroughly with my therapist.

Not the only one

Styles is not alone in having performed a “shoey” from the stage. according to The New York Times both Post Malone (27) and Kacey Musgraves (34) have been requested by fans to take part in the ritual.

Avisa also writes that the phenomenon has existed for many years, but got new life in Australia after Formula 1 star Daniel Ricciardo (33) started celebrating victories with a “shoey”.

Georgia Maloney (24), who in 2019 worked as a concert photographer in Sydney, estimated that she heard the audience calling for a “shoey” one in five concerts.

– We are the only country in the world that requires artists to drink beer from a shoe. It’s really small, she said.
