Harry seeks access to Palace emails in Sun lawsuit

(ANSA) – LONDON, NOV 15 – Prince Harry has asked his lawyers for access to an archive of Buckingham Palace emails which would be “highly relevant” in the legal action launched at the High Court of London against the editorial group of the Sun tabloid owned by the ‘shark’ Rupert Murdoch for violations of privacy and illegal collection of information on the second son of King Charles III. These are messages exchanged between five email accounts of the leaders of News Group Newspapers (NGN) and as many of senior officials of the British royal house in the period between January 2013 and September 2019. The lawyer representing the Duke of Sussex in his crusade against the UK tabloid press, David Sherborne, underlined how those emails could help shed light on the prince’s legal action. Harry is one of the two plaintiffs, in addition to the former Labor deputy leader Tom Watson, to continue pursuing the case, while 39 VIPs involved – from Hugh Grant to the Spice Girl Melanie Brown – have preferred to accept offers of extrajudicial settlements by agreeing with the publishing group . As the UK press underlines, the request made by Harry’s lawyers to the court is based on the existence, according to the prince, of a “secret agreement” between the royal family and NGN. In the past the duke had pointed the finger at his brother William, with whom he has been at loggerheads for some time, stating that the heir to the throne had secretly received “a large sum of money” in the form of compensation in the context of an out-of-court settlement intended in theory to remain confidential for an old affair of illegal wiretapping. The judges will therefore have to rule on the admissibility of the emails in the trial due to begin in January and which risks being embarrassing for King Charles and the heir to the throne. (HANDLE).
