Harry Potter’s 4 Privet Drive Home Owners Regret Buying Iconic Film Location

FilmIn retrospect, the owners of a small family home in Bracknell, Berkshire, have not made such a good buy. The house in question served as 4 Privet Drive in the Harry Potter films, the home of Harry’s uncle and aunt, where he lived in the iconic broom closet under the stairs. However, the residents are harassed day and night by fans of the fictional wizard.

The current owners bought the house in 2016, and have not had a moment of rest since then, they tell the British newspaper The Sun. There is a constant influx of tourists from all over the world. “We find it very bizarre. People arrive here bursting into tears with emotion. You can still understand that about the children, but it is much more often about adults.”

“They show up here fully dressed, in outfits from the movie, to reenact certain scenes,” it continues. Usually they just allow Potter fans to come and take pictures, and even lend them a hand. “I have already moved my car for people who would like to get a good shot of the house. Sometimes those conversations are whole awkward, but we’ll take that. Although it remains strange to see a horde of adults having a dress-up party in your front yard.”

But sometimes it just goes too far. “I once caught someone trying to climb over our fence. Then I did draw a line and chase them away: ‘Oh my God, don’t do that!’.”

“You never really get used to it,” admits one of the residents. “You open the curtains in the morning, and you see them. They are there all day, every day, and often at night too. They come from all over to catch a glimpse of our home. I have already met people from America, Japan and Germany. School holidays are the worst. When I get home from work, they’re in the driveway. It really is a madhouse. They sometimes come in groups, I have even seen one of ten men. They come in vans or by car. One time someone even brought the same car as in the films: a Ford Anglia.”

Never told

“Of course we knew which house we were buying,” he explains. The first Harry Potter film was released in 2001, and the house was sold in 2016 for 552,000 euros. I understand why. Nobody told us that so many people would be here every day. They really come knocking on the door, to ask us something. Well, some people don’t even bother… ”

“All in all, I don’t think it’s that bad,” he concludes. “Harry Potter is fantastic, I get that. We just never expected that after all these years we would still get so many people over the floor. That people want to come and take pictures is no problem, but given the constant influx, it does get tiring. ‘Harry Potter’ is just one of those franchises that still lives as hard after all these years. Sometimes I don’t understand that. I also find it difficult for our neighbors, because it is in their driveway that everyone takes a seat to take a good picture of our house.”

Bezemkast, check

Although only the front of the house was used in the first film (the entire street was later recreated in a studio) and the scenes that take place inside were shot in a studio, the appeal for Potter enthusiasts remains strong. However, the owner does confirm that the house does indeed have a broom cupboard under the stairs. However, it is not a young wizard who sleeps there, but the dog of the family. “Besides a lot of junk that we never use,” the owner shrugs sheepishly.
