Sat.1 doesn’t have many guarantees of success in its program, but the broadcaster can always rely on one ace up its sleeve: Harry Potter – and it worked again yesterday, Saturday. The umpteenth broadcast of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” was seen by 1.15 million people in prime time. The really remarkable thing, however, is the market share: in the young target group of 14 to 49 year olds, the 2005 film secured primetime victory with 11.4 percent. No other program after 8:15 p.m. achieved a higher market share in this age group.

At the same time, this means that the counterprogram was apparently not very appealing. The third edition of the “big GEO show”, for example, fell deeply: the RTL knowledge show presented by Dirk Steffens and Sonja Zietlow started in May to a solid 1.69 million viewers and 11.5 percent of the target group. Yesterday, however, only 1.09 million people were interested in the more than three-hour broadcast. The market share among 14 to 49 year olds was a sobering 7.1 percent.

The ratings for the related ZDF program “The Great Germany Quiz” were manageable in previous editions. Although the show moderated by Sabine Heinrich was well ahead of the private broadcasters with a total of 2.81 million viewers (12.8 percent), that is only mediocre by ZDF standards. However, interest among the young target group was above average at 9.4 percent. Das Erste, on the other hand, had an easy time of it, where the crime thriller “The Diplomat – Missing in Rome” won primetime by a wide margin. A whopping 5.34 million viewers ensured a total market share of 23.2 percent, which also corresponded to a new all-time record for the series with Natalia Wörner. The young age group also achieved a convincing 9.6 percent. Only the 8 p.m. “Tagesschau,” which was previously seen by 5.66 million people at 26.8 percent, had an even greater reach.

ProSieben once again relied on an inexpensive Saturday evening program and showed the clip show “The world is amazed by this”. The audience response was correspondingly: just 630,000 people were interested in “The Most Absurd Talents Ever”. The target group market share was below average 6.4 percent. Sister station Kabel Eins initially showed two repeats of the US series “9-1-1 Notruf LA” and achieved market shares of between 4.4 and 4.8 percent and just over half a million viewers. The spin-off “9-1-1: Lone Star” was able to almost maintain the values from 10:15 p.m. and had market shares between 4.4 and 4.7 percent, while the reach fell to 430,000 viewers.

RTL Zwei and VOX entered the race with film classics. 710,000 viewers chose the sci-fi film “Stargate” on RTL Zwei, including 240,000 from the young target group, which ensured a pleasing 5.4 percent. The action thriller “White House Down” on VOX had a slightly better 750,000 viewers, but had to be content with just 4.3 percent among 14 to 49 year olds.
