Harry Kane has eclipsed both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by earning his 50th cap in just 71 games.
England’s blush was spared after Kane’s late penalty saved them a point against Germany in Munich after they trailed most of the second half.
The Tottenham Hotspur striker became only the second England player, after Wayne Rooney, to score half a ton and the 72nd man in football history to reach that milestone – notably much quicker than Ronaldo, who needed 114 games to do so, and Messi, who needed 107.
Tributes for England’s captain poured in after the game on social media, with former Three Lions forward Gary Lineker taking the lead.

“50 goals for @HKane. Fabulous performance. England play so much better when tried. Too much talent to play overly cautious and it’s not playing to its strengths,” Lineker tweeted.
After the game, Kane expressed his excitement at having brought his half-century together.
“A really nice feeling, you know. I had a couple of early chances in the game. Obviously the first over the bar and then Neuer made a good save for the second,” Kane said.
“I thought it might be one of those days but we kept going and probably played our best football in the last half hour of the game. Physically we were really strong and good to score the goal and it’s just a pity that we didn’t reach the goal in the end.

“I love scoring goals, I’ve always loved scoring goals, especially for my country. Whenever I can help the team, that’s the most important thing. It’s good to bounce back with a result tonight, it’s not an easy place and now we’ll have two games at home to try and get two wins.”
Kane is now just three goals shy of Rooney’s England record of 53, and at 28 he has a chance not just to break him but gut him completely – but then again, we’ve said the same thing about Rooney and Michael Owen, haven’t we ?
Jonas Hoffman put Germany ahead on the night five minutes into the second half with a well-made close-range finish, but Kane converted late from the point after stumbling from Nico Schlotterbeck in the box.
The tie leaves England at the bottom of their Nations League group with just one point from two games.
