Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, have been invited to attend the coronation of King Charles III but the couple, who left the UK to live in the US in 2020, have not yet specified whether they will make the trip.
According to a spokesman for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex quoted by the British daily, Prince Harry “recently received an email from Her Majesty’s Office regarding the coronation” of 74-year-old Charles, which is due to take place on May 6, lemonde.fr reports
“An immediate decision regarding the participation of the duke and duchess will not be communicated by us at this stage,” said the spokesperson.
The return of the Dukes of Sussex to the UK to attend the coronation has been the subject of much speculation in the British media in recent months, following the couple’s virulent attacks on the royal family.
After a documentary aired on Netflix in December, Harry, 38, published his controversial memoir “Spare” in early January, in which he talks about his adolescence marked by alcohol and drugs and details the breakup relations with his father, King Charles III, and his brother, William.
Harry and Meghan have only returned to the UK on rare occasions since their departure in 2020, most notably to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II last September. The Duke of Sussex traveled alone for the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip, in 2021, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Evacuate Frogmore Cottage
On these trips, the pair stayed at Frogmore Cottage, but this week King Charles III revoked their right to live in the residence.
The Sun and The Telegraph reported that Buckingham Palace had sent an “eviction notice” to the couple, who since leaving Britain have launched numerous criticisms of the British royal house.
Frogmore Cottage, a five-bedroom residence near Windsor Castle in west London, was given to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 as a wedding gift.
A source close to the Dukes of Sussex, quoted by their biographer Omid Scobie, said that they will have “until the beginning of the summer” to move the rest of their belongings from the residence.
