Clarkson had a regular column in the British tabloid for many years and repeatedly caused a storm with her outspoken features and statements.
Last week, the former Top Gear presenter wrote that she “hated” Meghan and had dreams that she would one day be forced to “walk naked on the streets” of British cities as residents shouted obscenities and threw excrement at her.
Removed and sorry
Many of The Sun’s readers were not amused by Clarkson’s column, and over 20,000 complained about it to the UK’s equivalent of Norway’s Press Professional Committee, the Independent Press Standards Organization (IPSO).
Many well-known Britons have also criticized Clarkson, including Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and author Philip Pullman.
The Sun removed the entire column from the web on Monday, at Clarkson’s request, but the criticisms didn’t stop. On Friday, the paper felt compelled to issue a public apology.
– We at The Sun apologize for the publication of this article and sincerely regret it was read on the newspaper’s website. The article has now also been deleted from the archive, it is added.
PR stunt
But on Saturday, a spokesman for the couple, formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, criticized the newspaper for not contacting Meghan directly.
– The fact that The Sun hasn’t reached out to the Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows their intentions. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt, says the spokesman.
Furthermore, it is said that it is good that the newspaper regrets, but that “we would not be in this situation if The Sun did not continue to profit and exploit hatred, violence and misogyny”.
Clarkson later apologized on Twitter and wrote that it was all a commentary on the Netflix series “Harry amp; Meghan” and an awkward attempt at amusement referring to a scene from the Game of Thrones series.
In the Netflix series, Meghan accuses the British tabloids of being racist, of having tried to “destroy” her and of being complicit in the loss of the child she was carrying.
