Harris-Trump presidential debate: former president threatens not to attend – 2024-08-27 17:52:48

Donald Trump has cast doubt on his participation in the debate scheduled for September 10 with his electoral rival, Kamala Harris, ahead of the November presidential elections, while the two campaigns differed on Monday on some of the rules of that night.

Earlier this month, Trump had agreed to participate in the debate organized by ABC News and which had originally been agreed upon with President Joe Biden’s campaign. This after having initially said that he would not participate in the face-to-face and that he would only debate with Harris on September 4 in a meeting that was organized by Fox News (and on which there has been no agreement with the Harris campaign).

The Sept. 10 debate is the only one that both campaigns have officially committed to holding with a network. Trump has proposed debating at meetings organized by Fox News y NBC News.

Trump cast doubt on his participation in the debate ABC News via a social media post Sunday night, possibly angry at an opinion program that had aired earlier on that channel.

“This morning I watched ABC FAKE NEWS, both the ridiculous and biased interview with Tom Cotton by journalist Jonathan Carl (who was fantastic!) and his so-called Trump Haters Panel, and I wonder, why would he do the debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” the former president asked.

“Why did Harris reject Fox, NBC, CBS, and even CNN? Stay tuned,” the former president wrote.

A tug-of-war over the rules of the debate between Harris and Trump on September 10

Trump’s comments were joined on Monday by differences between the campaigns over the rules of face-to-face confrontations. The most heated one: whether microphones should be turned off when the candidates are not supposed to speak.

Harris campaign senior communications adviser Brian Fallon said in a statement that they had requested from ABC and other networks that “both candidates’ microphones must be on throughout the broadcast.”

“We understand that Trump’s advisers prefer the microphone to be muted because they don’t believe their nominee can act presidentially for 90 minutes on his own,” Fallon said.
