Vice President Kamala Harris plans to make her first visit to the southern border of the United States as a presidential candidate, with plans to attack and counteract the proposals of former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump on immigration y border security.
Harris is scheduled to visit the Arizona border town of Dougal on Friday, her campaign announced Wednesday. A campaign aide said he will highlight Trump’s role in sinking a bipartisan border deal on Capitol Hill this year, which would bolster border security and provide more resources to control immigration.
Harris plans to explain his plan to strengthen border securityhow he is pushing the toughest bipartisan border security plan in a generation, including new border agents and technologies to stop trafficking of fentanyl and other illegal drugs, and how Donald Trump ordered Republican lawmakers not to approve it because doing so would favor Biden.
The measure would have allowed the White House to close the border if too many migrants tried to cross it, and would have raised “credible fear” criteria for asylum application interviews and would have funded more border agents and more deportation flights.
“Donald Trump found out about the bill, realized it was going to solve an issue he wanted to campaign on, and told them to kill the bill, not to put it to a vote,” Harris said Wednesday. in an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle. “He killed a bill that actually would have been a solution, because he wants to campaign on a problem, instead of solving it.”
As former attorney general of California, a border state, Harris took on international gangs and criminal organizations that traffic drugs, weapons and humans as well as believes we need an immigration system that is safe, fair, orderly and humanein stark contrast to Donald Trump’s divisive and dangerous politics.
Harris has promised that if elected, she will revive the bill and sign it into law.
Trump has made the border and immigration a central element of his speech for the presidencyand has made multiple visits to the southern border during the campaign.
Trump also has a history of using degrading language to describe immigrants, calling them “animals,” comparing them to the fictional cannibal Hannibal Lecter, and baselessly arguing that they are taking “black jobs.” In recent days, he has spread lies about Haitian immigrants legally residing in Springfield, Ohio.
Trump has characterized Harris in his speeches as weak on the border. On Tuesday, he said on Truth Social that Harris was going to the border “for political reasons.”
Kamala Harris pledged her support for immigration reform that will increase security at the border, but also offer a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, during the tour of several states in August.
