Harris takes lead over Trump in US poll average – 2024-08-25 20:33:20

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris leads Republican rival Donald Trump by 3.2 percentage points in an average of polls released Friday.

According to The Hill/DDHQ summary, Vice President Harris has 49.2 percent support, while former President Trump had 46 percent.

The Democrat’s popularity rating remains a key aspect of her political viability, which holds the potential to mobilize support for her current presidential campaign, analysts say.

Harris closed the Democratic National Convention last night with a call to put the divisions and bitterness of the past behind her, during a speech in which she formally accepted her party’s nomination.

Before a packed United Center, a multi-sport venue with capacity for 23,500 spectators in the city of Chicago, he gave the speech that is perhaps the most important of his career.

The candidate acknowledged the political career of President Joe Biden, who on July 21 renounced re-election and supported her.

He also presented a clear agenda with a proposal that seeks unity amid the strong political polarization that the country is experiencing. He did not shy away from controversial issues such as the economy, migration, reproductive rights and, in foreign policy, he referred to the conflict in Ukraine and Israel’s aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza.

While reiterating his support for Tel Aviv, he called for a ceasefire agreement, said the suffering must stop and at one point referred to Palestinians being able to claim their rights to freedom, security and self-determination. His speech also criticized Trump, whom he called a “not serious man” and warned of the catastrophic consequences of electing him for a second term.

Harris became the first woman of Indian and Jamaican descent to win the nomination from one of the two traditional US parties, which alternate the White House every four years.
