Vice President and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harrishas a narrow lead over his Republican rival, Donald Trumpamong American voters, according to a poll by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) held after this month’s Democratic convention.
The poll released Friday shows that 48% of voters have a mostly positive opinion of the Democratic candidate, compared to 47% of the former Republican president, when asked which of the two is preferred; when more independent candidates are included, Harris also leads Trump, by a difference of 2 points, 47% to 45%.
However, this advantage falls within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
This is the first poll conducted by the WSJ since April of last year in which a Democratic candidate has led Trump.
In the newspaper’s poll conducted in late July, Trump had a 2-point lead over Harris.
But it’s not all bad news for Republicans: When the poll asked voters who would better handle the economy – a key issue in the November election – Trump took an 8-point lead over Harris and also took a 5-point lead on a question about who would better handle inflation.
At the end of last year, Trump led Biden by about 20 points on both issues.
In this poll, Harris earned a much higher popularity rating. 49% of voters said they had a favorable opinion of her, equal to the share with an unfavorable opinion. That marks a big improvement from early July, when unfavorable opinions outnumbered positive opinions of Harris by 23 percentage points.
About 45% said they had a favorable view of Trump and 53% said they had an unfavorable view — a weaker rating than voters give Harris but better than the ratings the former president earned before his assassination attempt in July.
Regarding the vice presidents, the Democratic governor of Minnesota, Tim Walzgot a more favorable rating than unfavorable, 46% to 40%, while unfavorable opinions of Trump’s running mate, the Ohio senator JD Vanceoutnumbered positive opinions by 10 points, 50% to 40%. EFE (I)
