Harris meets with Xi to maintain a line of communication

US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke briefly with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday to keep lines of communication open between the two countries.

Harris and Xi exchanged comments on Saturday as they entered a closed-door meeting at the Asia-Pacific Cooperation (APEC) summit in Bangkok.

“Sayed goodbye to President Xi before APEC leaders withdrew,” Harris wrote on Twitter.

“I highlighted a key message that President Biden emphasized in his November 14 meeting with President Xi: we must keep the lines of communication open to responsibly manage competition between our countries,” he added.

The exchange echoed Biden’s comment to Xi at the previous meeting that China and the US should keep lines of communication open.

A brief statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry also referred to the Biden-Xi meeting as part of the Group of 20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

He said it was a “strategic and constructive” meeting with “great significance in guiding the next phase of China-US relations.”
