“We have to accept the results of this election,” the vice president said in a determined tone after his loss to the Republican.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden praised Harris. “She will remain a leader our children will look to with hope for generations to come as she leaves her mark on America’s future,” Biden said in a statement.
Harris, who replaced Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee in July, was “an incredible partner and public servant of integrity, courage and character,” Biden said. “Under extraordinary circumstances, she stepped forward and led a historic campaign, the epitome of what is possible when led with strong morals and a clear vision for a country that is freer, fairer, and full of more opportunity for all Americans “, he added.
Biden also said that choosing Harris as vice president was the best decision he ever made. “Her story represents the best of American history. And as she made clear today, I have no doubt that she will continue to write this story,” Biden added.
Harris conceded the election loss in a speech in Washington after US media predicted that Trump was a clear winner in the swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
“I lost this election, but I didn’t lose the battle that fueled this campaign,” she told supporters at Howard University, an iconic black institution.
Harris vowed to continue fighting for women’s rights and against gun violence and said “we will fight for the dignity that all people deserve.”
Harris addressed supporters who included former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, advisers from President Joe Biden’s administration and thousands of her followers who listened to campaign songs including Beyoncé’s Run the World (Girls) and We Gon ‘ Be Alright by Ty Tribet. Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz was also there.
Joe Biden called Trump to congratulate him on his victory and reiterated his invitation for the two to meet at the White House to discuss ensuring a smooth transition of power, President-elect Stephen Chung’s campaign spokesman said. “President Trump looks forward to the meeting that will take place soon and greatly appreciates the call,” he added.
