US presidential candidate Trump has now agreed to a televised debate with his Democratic opponent Harris. The debate is to be broadcast on ABC on September 10.

Former US President Donald Trump has proposed to his election opponent Kamala Harris that they hold three televised debates in September. The debates should take place on September 4, 10 and 25 on the channels Fox News, NBC and ABC, said the Republican presidential candidate at a hastily arranged press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in the US state of Florida.

Date set for 10 September

ABC announced that Harris and Trump have agreed to a televised debate on September 10. The second duel between Trump and President Joe Biden was originally scheduled for this date. However, Biden decided not to run again after his miserable performance in the first duel with Trump, and the Democrats chose Vice President Harris as their replacement candidate.

Trump initially refused to run against Harris on this date and instead proposed a debate on September 4 on the right-wing channel Fox News, which is sympathetic to him. The Harris campaign then accused Trump of “playing games”, of being “afraid” and of wanting to “avoid” the debate. Trump now clearly wanted to refute this accusation with his proposal of three debates.

Trump did not give specific conditions, such as whether there would be an audience. The press conference was his first public appearance since Harris picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday.
