Harriet became very ill from corona, but her family did not: ‘I don’t understand’

Harriet did not infect anyone in her family, despite the fact that they were quarantined together. The complaints started at the end of March. “I work in the hospital and every morning the employees were screened.”

When asked how she felt, she said she had a headache and a sore throat. “But I also suffer from asthma and hay fever, so those complaints are not strange to me”, says Harriët.

Quarantined family

She turned out to have a fever and had to go home. “I handed in my things, but did not feel ill. After one day the fever was gone, but the increase, headache and chest tightness remained. I had myself tested to be sure and got the result two days later: positive.”

“Then we had to quarantine with the whole stuff: my husband, two children and I. We went home together for three weeks, because I continued to suffer from elevation. Then the company doctor and microbiologist said that I was no longer contagious. My husband and children were then allowed to go back to work. “

Harriet has been ill, she says. “I really had the complaints of corona. I had a lot of dizziness. At night I slept very badly. As a reaction to the virus I also got all kinds of blisters and bumps. My ribs also hurt and I could not do certain movements. . “

Husband and children no corona

No matter how sick she was, she couldn’t guarantee five feet indoors. “We have not been able to keep to that as a family. Me and my husband slept in the same bed and we all gave each other a hug. My son, who, like me, also has asthma and hay fever, also got complaints at one point. was tested, but turned out to be negative. “

Harriet’s husband has never received any complaints. “He was not bothered by anything. He did not test.”

Ultimately, Harriet returned to work in the hospital after three months. The confusion remains that she has not infected anyone in her family. “I don’t get it. The virus is so contagious, but no one has gotten sick.”

RIVM: ‘One is more sensitive than the other’

“That’s how it goes,” says RIVM spokesman Harald Wychgel about Harriet’s example. “It is not a 100 percent chance of transmission. The coronavirus is very contagious, but there are other diseases that are more contagious.”

“One person is more susceptible to an infection than the other. There are people who develop very severe, mild or even no symptoms. It may be that a very large group is infected, but does not get any symptoms. All this does not change anything. message that the disease is contagious. ”
