Harlem Residents React to Rumors of Asylum Seeker Shelter in Community

“They should take us out and put us in a new building, not for immigrants.”

This is the reaction of a Harlem resident, who did not want to give her name, following a rumor that a building on the corner of 130th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd could be converted into a shelter for asylum seekers.

“That is for us who have lived here for years, we have worked for years, they also have to understand that they have to give us priority first,” said the neighbor.

And after a community forum in Harlem, where Mayor Eric Adams attended and addressed various questions, focusing especially on the issue of housing, many residents expressed their indignation since the plan for the new reception center for immigrants was not announced. to the community.

Adams had no choice but to reverse his plan to turn the property into a shelter for asylum seekers and said he would instead house homeless New Yorkers in the area.

“We are very angry, because we live here and we have the right to be considered first for housing within the community,” said Regina Smith, another neighbor.

Smith says they also oppose a homeless shelter, believing there are too many in the community.

At the forum, residents also expressed concerns about municipal spending and asked that tax funds be allocated to youth programs.

According to city records, the complex, which has 35 units, is a luxury home with a pool and has been vacant for more than a decade since it was built in 2007.

After the meeting, Adams proposed the idea of holding a two-hour workshop dedicated exclusively to the issue of housing, and also promised residents that he would give them a tour of the building.
