Haris Doukas: “Mr. Bakoyiannis continues the sad role of government contractor” – 2024-08-02 12:45:52

In response to the announcement of Mr. Bakoyannis, the Mayor of Athens, Harry Doukas emphasized: “Mr. Bakoyiannis continues unabated in the sad role of the government’s contractor in the attack against Athens and the institution of self-government. The city’s social safety net, contrary to its claims, is constantly being strengthened.

For example, the municipal clinics are being upgraded in Patisia and Ampelokipi, the Office for Combating Energy Poverty was opened and the job center for the work integration of vulnerable groups will soon start operating. At the same time, the operation of a structure for vulnerable LGBTI+ people is being prepared.”

With regard to the specific issues invoked by Mr. Bakoyiannis, in a statement the Municipality of Athens states that:

“1. The Center for Combating Sexual Violence, not only is not closing, but is evolving into a Support Center for Victims of Sexual Violence, with new comprehensive intervention services.

2. The Shelter for Abused Women will continue its services during August, because the women will be accommodated in another safe area of the Municipality of Athens more suitable for their children during the summer season. This was done after they accepted the relevant proposal of the special scientific team of the Municipality.

3. Especially for the Multipurpose Homeless Center, Mr. Bakoyiannis delivered the Multipurpose Center full of cockroaches, flies and bed bugs, according to a report of the General Directorate of Public Health and Social Care of the Attica Region at the beginning of 2024. Today and despite the difficulties that exist due to the lack of staff – a result of government bans – we are renovating rooms, installing fire safety and changing doors for safety reasons.

We received from Mr. Bakoyannis a structure that accommodated eight people per room with bunks – as a slave trader’s hold – and today we are reclassifying it with single, double and triple rooms.

We are also preparing an organizational chart and integration of the Center into the NSRF for its complete upgrade. Today, there are 200 guests, while the Day Center offers food, personal hygiene and social worker services to an additional 150 people.”
