Regarding the conversion of the Monastery of Chora into a mosque, Haris Doukas, from the headquarters of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Fanari, where he met with the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, emphasized: “We are deeply saddened by the latest development, the conversion of the Monastery of Chora with the unparalleled mosaics, in a mosque. UNESCO’s world cultural heritage sites belong to all humanity and the observance of international standards of their protection is a clear international obligation that binds all states.”
The Mayor of Athens highlighted the valuable role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, “a historic institution that builds bridges between peoples”. Addressing the Ecumenical Patriarch, he said that “the initiatives that you have personally undertaken for interreligious dialogue, the promotion of peace and the conversation of civilizations acquire particular value, especially today, when our neighborhood is tested by two armed conflicts. As well as your actions for the formation of ecological awareness and dealing with climate change, they are for all of us a source of inspiration and an example to follow. Thank you very much for receiving me today.”
In turn, the Ecumenical Patriarch congratulated Mr. Doukas for the honorable trust of the Athenians in him and wished him every success in his work.
