Haris Azhar denies accusations of asking Luhut for Freeport shares

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Human rights activists Haris Azhar | denied the accusations by the lawyer for the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Juniver Girsang regarding the request for PT Freeport shares.

“Who am I to ask for Freeport’s shares? If there is documentary evidence I asked for the shares or what is meant, please convey it, don’t just talk,” said Haris when contacted CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday (30/9).

Furthermore, Haris admitted that he had indeed visited the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Marves. However, at that time, his visit to the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries was to assist the Forum for the Firstborn Rights Owners (FPHS) for indigenous peoples around the Freeport Indonesia mining area.

“Since Freeport Indonesia’s divestment to Inalum, they (indigenous people) are guaranteed the allocation of their shares, but until now it is not clear where the shares will go,” said Haris.

It is known, in mid-2018, the government through PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (Persero) officially holds 51 percent of PT Freeport Indonesia’s shares. The Minister of SOEs at the time, Rini Soemarno, stated that the Papuan Regional Government and Mimika Regency would get 10 percent of Freeport Indonesia’s shares. From the 10 percent stake in the Papua regional government, it is divided into 7 percent for Mimika Regency, including for ulayat rights (customary law), and 3 percent for Papua Province.

According to Haris, at that time he did not meet Luhut, but one of the officials of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, namely the Special Staff for Legal Affairs of the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Lambok Nahattands.

“At that time it was Pak Lambok, one of the officials at the Coordinating Minister for Marves. It was not LBP who met us. My documents are complete regarding all of this. And until now it is not known what the contribution of the Marves office to the issue of indigenous people’s shares has been,” he said.

“So, statement LBP’s attorney is not right to accuse me of asking for shares,” he added.

Luhut’s lawyer, Juniver Girsang previously accused Haris had asked Luhut for Freeport shares. He said this when he was one of the speakers on the Mata Najwa show, Wednesday (29/9).

Juniver said the accusation was to provide context regarding the close relationship between Haris and Luhut.

Haris Azhar also came to Luhut asking for shares. Try checking with him (Haris Azhar), Freeport. What’s the story, he asked, what does it mean,” Juniver said in the show.

When Juniver’s allegations published on Thursday (30/9) at 09.29 WIB, CNN Indonesia tried to contact Haris Azhar got clarification, but couldn’t get in touch and got a response after 15 minutes. The clarification from Haris Azhar was only obtained on Thursday (30/9) afternoon.
