Mumbai: Fans were in for a surprise when the BCCI announced the Indian squad for the Twenty20 World Cup 2024 the other day. While Malayalee wicketkeeper Sanju Samson was selected for the World Cup squad for the first time, allrounder Rinku Singh was left out of the 15-member squad. But neither Sanju nor Rinku was the most debated name in the selection committee meeting.
Before the team selection for the T20 World Cup, Sanju Samson was one of the biggest talking points in the minds of the fans. But the most discussed name in the selection committee meeting is Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians captain in IPL. BCCI sources told news agency PTI “There was not much talk about Sanju’s inclusion, but there was a lot of discussion about Hardik Pandya. What is more interesting is that Hardik, who came to the team at the last minute despite being out of form in the IPL and not captaining Mumbai Indians, has been made vice- captain of the World Cup team.
Meanwhile, after a fierce competition with Shivam Dubey, it was decided to give Dubey a chance to outclass Rinku Singh, BCCI sources say. Impressive form in IPL 2024 has been a factor in Dubai’s favour. While Shivam Dubey was included in the 15-member squad, the selectors included only Rinku Singh in the list of reserved players.
Twenty20 World Cup Squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Yashaswi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket keeper), Shivam Dubey, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj.
Players reserved: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khalil Ahmed, Avesh Khan.
