Coordinated checks by the specialized staff and veterinarians of the Attica Region continue for the fifth day after the appearance of the first case of sheep and goat plague in a livestock unit in Aspropyrgos.
So far more than 2,000 animals have been tested, with the samples being negative in all cases. At the same time, in the framework of the application of the European health protocols, on Friday afternoon the killing process (narcotics and bloodless pithing process) and cremation of all 650 animals of the unit in which the positive case had been found was completed, with each stage being supervised by three levels of Veterinary Service of the Attica Region.
In the next few hours, the disinfection of the unit in Aspropyrgos, which was placed in quarantine after the appearance of the positive case, will be completed, while the checks on all farms located within the protection zone remain constant.
Following the order of the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, from the first moment, all the competent employees of the Region are in the region, under the Deputy Regional Governor of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine, Dimitra Angelakis.
The Regional Governor of Attica stated: “I want to personally thank all the employees of the Veterinary Service of the Attica Region for their exemplary work and contribution all these days and our breeders for their patience and perfect cooperation. From the first moment, we moved directly together with the relevant ministries, upgrading the measures, in accordance with the European protocols.
At the moment, we are continuing the tracing in the zones of three and ten kilometers, exactly as the European directive provides, with the specialized personnel of our services in the field continuously – fighting primarily against time – in order to limit the disease. At this stage, thanks to the immediate reflexes and the strict, but necessary, measures we took, it seems that we have managed to prevent the spread.
However, we are not resting. Controls are continuous and thorough in all livestock units and will continue throughout the next period, so that we can be sure that the product that reaches the consumer is absolutely safe”.
