Hard to Chip, Threatened Reduced Production of Samsung Phones

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Cell phone production Samsung threatened to decrease due to scarcity chipset Qualcomm which is used as the brain smartphone the South Korean manufacturer.

Reuters’ first source said this scarcity is expected to hit mid-range and low-end Samsung smartphones.

While the second source also said there was difficulty getting the Snapdragon 888 supply. However, he did not mention whether this shortage would affect the supply of Samsung’s premium class phones.

Qualcomm is reportedly struggling to meet demand for the production of chips used in smartphones from Samsung to Xiaomi.

This difficulty is related to the shortage of chips that previously hit the automotive industry, as cited by two Reuters sources.

This chip scarcity occurred because Qualcomm had difficulty getting a supply of one of the subcomponents used in their chip.

Samsung is one of the cellphone manufacturers who feel the scarcity of this chip, as mentioned by the two suppliers for the world’s largest cellphone factory.

A Samsung spokesman declined to comment on this. A Qualcomm spokesperson referred to a public comment by one of their executives that they are optimistic about meeting their fiscal targets in the second quarter.

Separately, senior executives from a number of well-known manufacturers for several major brands also stated that they were having difficulty obtaining supplies of a number of components from Qualcomm. So, they will cut shipments this year.

Last month, Lu Weibing, Vice President of Xiaomi also complained about the difficulty of this chipset.

“It’s not just rare, it’s very rare,” he wrote on the Weibo page.

Demand for Qualcomm chipsets has increased in recent months. The increase in demand is due to the Android phone manufacturers competing to fill the market niche left by Huawei. Huawei sales shrank due to US sanctions.
