Hard lesson for Ziyech: ‘Bizarre what happened there, difficult to accept’

Ajax’s dramatic Champions League elimination against Tottenham Hotspur eighteen months ago remains an open wound for Hakim Ziyech. He says he has learned from it.

“A childhood dream collapsed,” says Ziyech in an interview with The Guardian back when Lucas Moura made the 3-2 in the 95th minute, which meant that not Ajax, but Spurs qualified for the final of the Champions League. “It’s hard, it’s painful.”

“What happened there is bizarre and it is still hard to accept,” Ziyech continues. “You don’t always get what you deserve: you have to learn from that and I did. Now I know that the match is only over once the referee has whistled.”

At the end of November, Ziyech will take on Chelsea against Tottenham Hotspur. Last week, the 27-year-old playmaker made his official debut for The Blues as a substitute. He also played for half an hour in the Champions League match against Sevilla (0-0) midweek.
