The latest data from the storage world has hit the internet, demonstrating a sustained drop in HDD shipments to store shelves! We are talking, more specifically, of a fall of 33% year after year.
Why this fall? It’s simple, some consumers don’t even remember that traditional mechanical hard drives are still a reality. The market is 100% focused on the SSD, as even the new generation consoles, in turn equipped with super-fast SSDs, demonstrate.
This is not forgetting the change in requirements for a lot of essential software, as is the example of Microsoft’s Windows 11 Operating System.
Hard Disk is disappearing. Is it a goodbye, or a see you soon?
So, in the last quarter, about 45 million units were shipped to the shelves, which compared to the heyday of 2010, is just a simple fraction… In case you didn’t know, per quarter, at that time of the championship, around 165 million HDD drives were sent to the market.
However, this does not mean that it is the end of the road for HDD. At least not in more professional markets where there are huge storage needs.
In other words, for consumers, the HDD’s fate is 99% sealed… The old hard disk is now an obsolete technology, and for that very reason, it will just fall into oblivion. Especially now, as the technology that powers SSDs continues to evolve, and get cheaper and cheaper. (Have I said hello to the new PCIe 5.0 SSDs? (Link))
However, as mentioned above, in the world of servers, and research, there is still room for HDD, especially the latest versions, which already reach an incredible 30~40 TBs of pure and hard storage.
