You should take a closer look at this face. The comedy by Siegfried Lenz (“German Lesson”), directed by Georg Münzel at the Harburger Theater, is a hearty political grotesque – weird, funny, exaggerated. In short: a satirical pleasure about power, morality and identity.
Fearing an attempt on his life, the authoritarian ruler of a (fictitious) state forces the honest man Bruno Deutz to hand over his face to him. The master hairdresser looks exactly like the president and is the perfect doppelganger. And Bruno, vulnerable to blackmail because of his past as a revolutionary, joins in. Initially against his will, the philistine gradually shows his true face in the role of ruler – and gives free rein to his will to power in “The Face”. Similarities with actual circumstances and current horror figures are likely intended.
