Acoustics expert Patrick Hanlon has programmed haptic vests intended to enable deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers to enjoy a concert.

During a recent classical concert at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, attendees had the opportunity to wear wireless touchscreen jackets that reproduced music performed on stage.

The idea is to reproduce the eardrum’s function of transmitting sound frequencies to the bone. These amplified frequencies then become nerve impulses. When wearing tactile jackets, the skin performs this transport role.
