QUESTION ANSWER
‘Can car manufacturers be allowed to cheat with driving range?’
‘I am regularly surprised by the manufacturer’s statement of fuel consumption or (in the case of electric cars) driving range’, says reader JF Jonker in the weekly question & answer section of our car editors. For example, Tesla states a range of 507 kilometers for the Model Y, but in practice that turns out to be approximately 400 kilometers. This is outright deception, isn’t it? Car manufacturers are being prosecuted for cheating software, but isn’t this the same? If we buy packaging that says it contains 1000 grams, then it really has to contain that weight, right?’
