Luis Fajardo had not visited María Hernández Park in Bushwick for 20 years. Now this place is very different from how it was in the 90s.
“Personally, they assaulted me here twice … They assaulted us, they cut my neck a little bit because I didn’t have any money,” Fajardo said.
Fajardo says that not only is this place safer now, but he likes to know that this week they began to remodel it, starting with the construction of a synthetic grass court.
“I am very happy for the people who live here, now I return to this park almost after 28 years, I see it differently, I see it more beautiful and if they invest it would be even better,” added Fajardo.
And it is that neighbors say that the fact of building a soccer field will give young Latinos an opportunity to practice the sport they like and feel their roots.
“It is a good idea because this way the boys stay away from drugs and have a healthier, cleaner space to be able to enjoy the sport,” said a neighbor.
“A good idea to have the soccer field, let them see that the roots are there,” added another visitor to the park.
The final cost of this project is 3.4 million dollars and it is expected to be completed in the end of next year.
And it is that the park has become a more sporting space every time, but the neighbors do not find the spaces to practice sports.
“There are going to be more opportunities for the children to play more,” said another neighbor.
It is planned that next to the lawn an exercise area will be built with new equipment for the neighbors to exercise.
