Today is the great Christian holiday Demetrius Day, dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. The saint is also the patron saint of builders – architects, engineers, workers, who are also celebrating today.
Saint Demetrius lived in the 3rd century in Thessaloniki in the mayor’s family. After the death of his father, Dimitar took over this post. As the governor of the city, he preached the Christian faith, for which he was thrown into prison. Even before sentencing him, the soldiers kill him in his cell while he is praying. Later, the church proclaimed him a saint and martyr, and Thessaloniki honored him as the patron saint of the city.
Since ancient times, people have known that winter begins on St. George’s Day, just as summer begins on St. George’s Day.
It is believed that if the first guest on this day is a boy, more male animals will be born during the year. If the “walker” is a good and wealthy person, the year will be prosperous and healthy.
Engagements and weddings have always started on Dimitrov Day. In the Staroplanina regions, they observe that if the moon is full before the holiday, the bees will swarm and the hives will be full of honey, and the folds – with lambs.
On this day they celebrate: Dimitar, Dimitrina, Demetra, Dima, Dimo, Dimka, Dimcho, Dimana, Drago, Dragomir, Dragan, Mitko, Mitra, Mitka, Mitrana, Mita.
