“Happy birthday” by the window

Quebecer with coronavirus celebrated 61e birthday this week, watching his spouse wisely sitting outside his window in the Japanese hospital where he is confined.

Manon Trudel and Julien Bergeron from Pointe-aux-Trembles could soon return to the country. She was discharged from Fuji Medical Center on March 2, while her partner crossed his fingers after obtaining a first negative result from COVID-19. It takes two consecutive to be declared cured.

The lovers were separated in two different hospitals, on February 21, after a quarantine of 16 days on the cruise ship Diamond princess.

Now that Manon Trudel is healed, she will post herself, cell phone in hand, in front of her lover’s bedroom window at Toyota Kosei Hospital.

“It feels really good to see her,” said Bergeron, who is scheduled to take the next test on Monday.

Cigarette

The teacher at CEGEP de Sorel-Tracy did not intend to remain locked up during her first days in hospital, after all the time spent in her windowless boat cabin. She envied the 10-minute break outside offered to smokers.

“The first morning, when I knew that, I decided that I was going to be a smoker. I said to myself “better late than never”, says the 61-year-old woman, laughing. She went out of her way to find a cigarette that she never lit. The ploy lasted four days, until it changed floors after being tested positive for coronavirus.

Exit

She never had any symptoms and was finally discharged on March 2, 61e spouse’s birthday. The next day, she had a mission in mind, that of finding her lover, who was two hours away from her. She went to his hospital by train, and asked him on the phone what he saw from his room, so she could send him his hand.

At some point, the two lovebirds saw the same thing: a girl on a scooter with a white helmet. They found themselves a few yards apart, looking out of the window.

” I was happy. It’s been a dozen days since I last saw her, “said the man. Mme Trudel sat outside with his cell phone and newspaper until a nurse came out with a mask. She entered and was able to see her spouse in the opening of the door to her room, but did not enter.

The next day, she brought a birthday cake, which she left at the nurses’ station, and then returned outside with her own piece. They thus tasted the pastries, on both sides of the window, to underline the 61e anniversary.

They hope to return to the country, a few days after the return of Diane and Bernard Ménard, also infected on the Diamond princess.

“The saga is not over. We will only finish it when we have our feet in Canada, “concludes Mme Trudel.
