Hansen from Luxembourg will be agricultural commissioner, Zaharieva from Bulgaria commissioner for crises and aid-Agro Plovdiv – 2024-09-09 06:21:02

The European edition of “Politico” ranked the candidates for commissioners with the possible portfolios they will occupy, based on educated guesses.

According to the publication, Ekaterina Zaharieva will not be commissioner for regional development, but will be in charge of crisis management and humanitarian aid.

The media suggests that since Bulgaria is not in the running for any of the key jobs, this will be her rightful portfolio. Although Bulgaria submitted two names – one male, one female – Zaharieva is almost certain to get the job, as von der Leyen needs more women to have a gender-balanced college.

Christoph Hansen from Luxembourg will take over European agriculture in the next 5 years. He is 42 years old and has been an MEP from the European People’s Party until now. Hansen comes from a farming family and his cousin Martin Hansen is Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture. As an MEP, he led the negotiations on the new EU rules on deforestation and worked on the management of the national plans for the EU’s agricultural policy. The Luxembourger will also be seen as a sensitive choice among political groups and lobbies in von der Leyen’s attempt to depolarize the agricultural battleground, bringing his expertise on environmental and trade issues. Hansen is considered a strong candidate, potentially giving him the trade portfolio, Politico notes, just in case.
