With his novel “Wiesenstein”, Hans Pleschinski wrote a brilliant novel biography in 2018 about Gerhart Hauptmann, a celebrity and Nobel Prize winner. Now he takes on another poet: Paul Heyse, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1910) and once a cult author and favorite of German readers as the author of around 180 short stories, eight novels and 68 dramas. Anyone who has read the 280 pages of “Am Götterbaum” is of course very well informed about this man whom the Bavarian King Max II brought to Munich – equipped with an impressive pension – so that he could write poetry here.
