Kraay Jr. is overjoyed at Hiddink’s criticism: ‘Indeed, those damn violins!’

Hans Kraay junior and Guus Hiddink are both annoyed by the trend of necessarily building up from behind. In Hiddink’s view, a coach can only apply such a way of playing if he has top-level defenders.
“I get a little tired of the fact that everyone stands close to the goalkeeper with those two central defenders. Then the backs come along and start messing around,” said the critical Hiddink, who immediately received support from Kraay in Good morning Eredivisie. “Delicious, Guus, delicious.”
“As a coach you’re like: ‘Oh, goalkeeper’. Those feet aren’t in such a good position,” Hiddink adds. “So you hate those damn violins too?” Kraay wants to know from his table companion. “It can happen every now and then. But it is also copied from the top teams. But Manchester City or something can do that very well. They then accelerate forward very quickly,” Hiddink refers to manager Pep Guardiola’s team.
“So it is not the fault of the goalkeepers and central defenders that they act so crazy, but of the trainers, right?” Kraay then asks Hiddink. “Of course. You make your concept and your setup. Are we going to start like this, yes or no?”, the retired trainer explains how he usually worked in the past.
“Great. I think it’s so nice that you said this. So from now on we can blame all the trainers,” Kraay adds with a quip. Mario Been then joins the discussion about the sometimes risky way of defending and building up some teams.
“Some clubs turn it into a weapon. If you look at Feyenoord, the build-up always starts like this to attract opponents. This allows them to play those triangles with the midfielders. So it sometimes has value. But with the lesser teams you often see that it is played wide to a central defender, who hands it back to the goalkeeper. Then I think: Do that right away, if that is your intention.”
“I’m not saying it shouldn’t be done, but you shouldn’t use it as a total weapon,” Hiddink comments on Been’s explanation. “You say it well: players from mediocre clubs think they can build up from the five-metre line or the back line as if they were Manchester City players. Van Hanegem already said it in his column: ‘Be normal with all that retarded stuff'”, Kraay concludes.
