HIV is a virus that affects the immune system. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection. With AIDS, the immune system is damaged to such an extent that you quickly become ill. This can be deadly. In the Netherlands, the approximately 23,000 people who are HIV-positive do not have to die from AIDS. Thanks to medication, their immune system works well.
