Hanover: A metal worker is missing

With the “Zoologicum”, the Erlebnis Zoo Hannover wants to open a new attraction in the summer. However, the company cannot find a metalworker who can build bird aviaries and steel frame structures, for example. A bridge to the new facility cannot be built either – there is even a threat of a construction freeze. “We urgently need support,” says zoo boss Andreas Casdorff.

Hannover.Steel has long been considered a raw material with supply bottlenecks, for example in the construction industry. The Hannover Adventure Zoo, which is currently building its Zoologicum, is also specifically affected by this. The latest attraction, in which amphibians and birds are presented, among other things, is scheduled to open in the summer. According to zoo boss Andreas Casdorff, it is highly unlikely that this deadline can be met: Because the company cannot find a metal worker, work is progressing slowly. Above all, the zoo needs steel girders for a bridge, because without this structure, construction work will soon come to a complete standstill.

“The foundations are in place, construction is still,” says zoo construction project manager Sebastian Gädke. In the first public, Germany-wide tender, the zoo was unable to find a metal worker – although 17 companies were interested in this tender. In the end, three remained, of which one applicant failed to submit the necessary documents and the other two companies demanded exorbitant sums, as Sebastian Gädke says. “We simply don’t have the money for these additional costs,” says the zoo boss. Three million euros are estimated for the construction of the Zoologicum – with no room for improvement.
