Hannah Glass, a 19-year-old student, died after suffering anaphylactic shock caused by eating a gluten-free brownie that contained roasted peanut flour.

Hannah, who had a history of severe allergies, consumed two bites of the treat before experiencing hives and vomiting.

The brownie was made by a group of women on campus using substitute flour designed for gluten-free baking.

After consuming it, Hannah called her parents for guidance, remembering previous episodes of allergic reactions.

David indicated that he was recommended to take Benadryl, an antihistamine that initially seemed to stabilize his condition.

However, soon after, when he lay down to rest, his situation worsened drastically.

What symptoms did Hannah suffer from?

The student began to experience breathing difficulties, and her lung collapsed.

Although her grandmother arrived on the scene and administered an EpiPen while emergency services were called, Hannah suffered multiple seizures.

And, in the ambulance, his heart stopped beating for four minutes.

Doctors managed to revive her and put her on a ventilator, but tests revealed severe damage to her brain due to inflammation caused by the allergic reaction.

What decision did your parents make?

After five days on life support, Hannah’s parents faced the most difficult decision of their lives: taking her off the ventilator.

The young woman died on November 10, leaving an irreplaceable void in her family and friends.

In an emotional social media post, the parents described how anaphylactic shock quickly affected their ability to breathe, complicating any attempts by doctors to reverse the situation.

“Most of his brain was, unequivocally, severely and critically damaged,” they shared.

Despite the tragedy, Hannah’s family found solace in their decision to donate the young woman’s organs, which have already saved four people.

David expressed that this action was a way to prevent other families from facing the same pain.

“We decided to donate her body to help others have the opportunity to live that she no longer had. “It’s a small ray of light in the middle of a mountain of emotions,” he said.

Hannah’s case is a painful reminder of the dangers of severe food allergies and the importance of awareness about ingredients in prepared foods.
