RUHPOLDING. Hanna Öberg’s replacement stood for a top race.
The competition for the World Cup relay heats up after Sweden’s second place.
– Even if I do this race today, it is not certain that it will be enough, says Mona Brorsson.
Hanna Öberg was above Wednesday’s competition, but despite that, Sweden was close to taking the season’s first relay victory.
Anna Magnusson, Linn Persson and Mona Brorsson were responsible for almost spotless stretches and released Elvira Öberg to share the lead with Germany.
Sweden second
Until Öberg’s final stretch, Sweden had only needed one extra shot (Linn Persson) but Elvira Öberg’s lying shot allowed Julia Simon to pass and give France the victory.
Elvira Öberg needed two extra shots in the prone shooting, but full and fast shooting in the standing meant that Sweden took second place by a good margin, nine seconds behind France and 47 seconds ahead of Germany.
– I’m quite satisfied with my distance, but it’s clear… if you get to change into the lead, you want to take it all the way to the finish line. But I do too bad a lying series, it’s that simple, says Öberg.
“I am super satisfied”
No more relays are run before the WC, so the Swedish team got a good refresher before the championship in Nove Mesto, which starts in barely a month.
The competition for places in the WC relay is getting tougher.
– If it were a competition today, I would probably shape it like this. Mona Brorsson did it so well that I don’t think Hanna Öberg could have done it better. But at the WC they think that a fit Hanna Öberg should obviously be in a Swedish relay team, says expert Björn Ferry in SVT.
Brorsson himself was also exuberant after the relay.
– I am super satisfied. I couldn’t have done better today, it’s a blast from my side, says Brorsson.
Competition before the WC
It means a lot to Brorsson to show how she can perform in a relay. But she is aware that she might still not be allowed to drive in the WC.
– Even if I do this race today, it is not certain that it will be enough. Tough, but you just have to like the situation, she says.
How do you see your chances of keeping your place?
– I would say that they are good, but they are also good for Elvira, Hanna, Anna and Linn. I think that the coaches will have to make a fairly late selection where you go on the form of the day and be sure that regardless of how the selection looks, they will select those they think are the best for the day and so you must not take it personally.
At least you made the job a little harder for them.
– I hope so.
Head coach Johannes Lukas signs it.
– We have five riders that we can put in on any stretch and all of them would do well. It’s a luxury problem, he says.
