Kinnunen commented on the situation to Iltalehti. He says that the incident happened after the sports event in the parking lot, when people were waiting for each other. Kinnunen noticed how adults started talking about young athletes. The conversation took on unpleasant tones, so Kinnunen decided to intervene.

– I said that the way these 12-year-old girls were commented at that moment was not appropriate, Kinnunen says.

Kinnunen says that he intervened in the situation very calmly and reminded that growing young people are at a sensitive age when it comes to commenting.

– Commenting on one’s appearance, for example, does not seem nice to anyone of that age, while it does not seem nice to adults either. Adults should be aware of what kind of speech is used about children and young people, says Kinnunen.

The actor himself received an aggressive outburst from the man who had commented on the girls. Kinnunen says that he was startled by the reaction, even though there was no real danger, and that he eventually left the situation. On Instagram, he said that after the situation, he was crying and shaking in the car.

However, the actor emphasizes how important it is to intervene in how adults comment on children.

– I realized in that moment that if other adults don’t intervene in that conversation, then who will?

Kinnunen says that he has also talked through the situation with his own children.

– No child was harmed in the situation, that’s the most important thing.

Kinnunen thinks that, in general, more attention should be paid to the behavior of adults in children’s and youth’s hobby and sports events.

– On the side of the field, during the game, really horrible comments may be shouted at the field, children and young people. Even children’s own parents may yell abuse at their own children, and some yell at opposing team players. This is something that should be discussed much more, he emphasizes.

Kinnunen made an Instagram post about the situation he experienced.

– We are on each other’s side and especially on the side of children and young people. And toxic body language will never be the norm again, he writes.
