Hangzhou –
PBSI aiming for three gold when leaving for Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. Instead of realizing this, the Cipayung contingent finally went home without a single medal.
Unpleasant signals have appeared since the team event started. The Indonesian women’s team lost 0-3 to China in the quarter-finals, but what was most surprising was that the men’s team was eliminated in the same phase at the hands of South Korea with a score of 1-3.
In fact, the composition of the men’s team is largely similar to the team that won the Thomas Cup in 2021. PBSI responded calmly to the two defeats above. Indonesia is determined to dispel public doubts in individual numbers.
Unfortunately, it failed to materialize. One by one the Indonesian representatives fell. Some are in the first half, some are in the second half. Of the 10 representatives, Red and White only had three representatives left when they entered the quarter-finals.
They are Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto in men’s doubles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in men’s singles, and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in women’s singles. At first glance, the hope of bringing home a medal is still wide open.
Because, if you make it through to the semifinals, you will get at least a bronze medal. But what happened was surprising. The three representatives above fell in straight sets to their respective opponents.
For the first time since badminton was competed at the Asian Games in 1962, Indonesia failed to bring home a medal. This result also repeats what happened at the 2012 London Olympics, when Tepok Bulu failed to contribute a medal.
Public criticism also poured in for PBSI, especially via social media. The urge to improve things ahead of the 2024 Olympics is increasingly loud. There is not much time, and it must be used as best as possible so that the bad results in Hangzhou are not repeated in Paris. Can you?
