Hangover after marriage for director Adil El Arbi: Warner Bros. cancels “Batgirl” on HBO Max and in theaters

Now media confirm that Warner has changed his mind and – in addition to the animated film “Scoob!” – pulls the plug on the multimillion-dollar production “Batgirl”. The exact reason is guesswork, because Warner is not responding (for now).
Originally, “Batgirl” would only be shown on HBO Max, but the corona crisis also made it choose a theatrical release.

Well-known American film trade magazines talk about a changed strategy, because the company has changed hands. Former CEO Jason Kilar was fond of the idea of releasing films simultaneously on HBO Max and in the cinema during corona. He thereby brushed aside the tradition that a film first comes out in the cinema and can be seen there exclusively for three months and more.

This happened with, among other things, “The Matrix (4) resurrections”, while, for example, “Top gun: Maverick” waited – a so-called post-covid release – and became a resounding box-office success. Kilar faced a lot of criticism, but continued to use the word “victory”. The new Warner boss David Zaslav sees it differently and puts a theatrical release first.
