Well-known and lesser-known monuments in Bavaria are open today. On Open Monument Day, more than 600 historical buildings can be visited. Visitors can also learn how diverse the work of monument preservation is. Historical places, objects and archaeological finds are fascinating, says Susanne Fischer from the State Office for Monument Preservation.
This year, the following monuments are participating in the Free State: the building archive in the former Thierhaupten monastery (Augsburg district), the newly discovered floor plan of a former church on Fraueninsel in Chiemsee, the remains of a late medieval monastery on the Grosser Georgenberg near Bad Rodach (Coburg district), the royal villa in Regensburg and the oldest canal structure in Bavaria, the Karlsgraben in Treuchtlingen (Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district).
Minister of Culture Markus Blume (CSU) stresses: “Bavaria is the land of monuments and we are proud of our rich cultural heritage.” The Open Monument Day takes place every year on the second Sunday in September and is coordinated in Germany by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. This year’s motto is “True Signs. Witnesses of History”.
