SURYA.co.id | TULUNGAGUNG – Health Office (Dinkes) Tulungagung found 10 new cases of leprosy during January-mid-May 2021.

Handling of this disease was hampered due to the Corona virus pandemic conditions during 2020.

The data on disease findings caused by the mycobacterium leprae bacteria tends to continue to increase by an average of 5 patients per year.

In 2016 there were 25 patients, 2017 found 30 patients, in 2018 found 35 patients, and in 2019 found 40 patients.

Meanwhile, in 2020 there were only 20 patients because pandemic constraints made patients afraid to access health services.

“Patients are reluctant to come to the Puskesmas, therefore we maximize the role of officers in the field,” explained the Head of the Department of Infectious Disease Control and Prevention. Tulungagung, Muhroji.

Muhroji said Tulungagung does not include leprosy endemic areas.

The findings of this case were triggered by the mobility of residents and less clean and healthy lifestyles, among the patients who were found to have reached the stage of causing physical disabilities.

The increase in new patient findings is thanks to continuous outreach from health workers.
