For two days in August, the market for contemporary handicrafts will transform the parking deck of the Chamber of Crafts (HWK) on Georg-Schulhoff-Platz in Bilk into an “open-air” exhibition area. “Handicrafts on the parking deck have been a fixed date in the calendar for many visitors for years,” says Marie-Theres Sobik, foreign trade advisor at the HWK Düsseldorf. “Because there are always new and interesting craftspeople from Düsseldorf, the Rhineland as well as guests from all over Germany and neighboring countries to discover.”

The “Leather and Textiles” section includes 16 exhibitors, for example Ilex Hild from Cologne and Susanne Hinz from Aachen. Objects made of wood show eight craftsmen, including Markus Nießen from Kevelaer and Konrad Koppold from Leverkusen. Works made of glass, paper, ceramics and stone are also presented on the parking deck as well as hand-made bags, for example by Irene & Agnes Jansen from Aachen, Alexandra Lippert from Dortmund and Silvia Kruse-Nauen from Neuss.

As the host, the HWK announced that there was a great demand to participate as an exhibitor in “Handicrafts on the parking deck”. Anyone who is not a member of the HWK is checked by experts to ensure quality and diversity. There are even participants from neighboring countries, such as Belgium, this year.

Last year, the presentation was only shown online due to the corona pandemic. The HWK announced that “handicrafts on the parking deck” can now take place with visitors again, is very important for the craftsmen. The craftsmen are happy to have direct contact with visitors again, to advise them and to take orders personally. But since the corona pandemic is still ongoing, restrictions are still necessary this year. The number of exhibitors is somewhat limited compared to the 80 participants in 2020 in order to comply with the distance rules. The number of visitors to the 1,500 square meter exhibition area is also recorded and controlled by a chip system.
