Caen Handball started its Proligue season with a narrow defeat against Massy, candidate for the top of the table, Friday September 10, 2021 (30-31). The Caen, around a big defense, have long dominated the meeting. But the end of the match, with their many blunders, proved fatal.
Caen takes the lead in the heart of the first act
A little stuck at the start of the match, too often distressed by the opposing goalkeeper, the Caen needed ten minutes to free themselves from the pressure inherent in a first match at home. Fortunately, their strong defense from the start and the big performance of Santos, their own goalkeeper, had left a score of parity (3-3, 10 ‘).
It was after Mancelle’s equalizer from the penalty spot that Caen Handball got the better of their opponent. The right winger missed nothing, Lagier-Pitre lined up the missiles and the defense remained almost impassable. When Muyembo’s powerful arm took over, all the lights were green for the Rouge et Or (14-9, 29 ′).
Un money time fatal
Massy, logically, came back with better intentions in the second half. Hakkar recalled fond memories of the start of the match, but the Vikings did not panic. Guillard found new solutions at the pivot, when Mancelle (10 goals) and Muyembo (6 goals) remained surgical. As the match went by, the Caen margin became thinner. Control seemed less.
But in a handball match, it’s often the last ten minutes that really count. And in this money time, Caen gave a lot of ammunition to his opponent. Two lost balls first allowed Massy to equalize (27-27, 55 ′). It is another loose ball, yet in numerical superiority, which gave the advantage to the visitors (27-28, 56 ′).
The Vikings tried to come back, but when the ball slipped into Ales’ hands 50 seconds from the end, as the equalizer stretched out its arms, mass was said. Caen can harbor many regrets. It is surely better this way. To abuse the fifth of the past season in this way is clearly encouraging for the promoted Norman.
